Staff Consultant

Based in Austin, TX (preferred) or National

Position Summary

You will be responsible for supporting Texas school districts with project management and program implementation. There may also be additional MAYA projects to which you are expected to contribute. This position is based in Austin, TX (preferred) or could be remote. Applicants must be willing to travel up to 15% of the time to support our on-the-ground work in districts across Texas.

Who we are

The MAYA team was founded in June 2017, is based in Austin, Texas, and its consultants have more than 50 years of collective experience working in schools and school systems. MAYA provides strategic planning, project management, advising, and diversity, equity, and inclusion support in the education sector. Clients include schools, school districts, civic, policy, philanthropic, and nonprofit organizations.

You are able to learn about an organization you serve by listening carefully, by reviewing data, and by understanding the unique assets and challenges of the local community. You are able to refine the client’s approach by making adjustments to practices and systems that will accelerate progress towards achieving goals. You are able to distil and document the most promising practices and systems with the greatest impact for students and families. You can assist your client in scaling the most advanced yet acceptable (MAYA) practices and systems so they are accessible to more communities and sustaining their approach to be implemented efficiently and effectively long into the future. You are flexible to manage and coach others. You lead projects independently, and you are able to quickly and effectively build strong relationships and influence others with your ideas.

What You’ve done

Have at least 5 years of professional experience, especially in project and team management

  • Demonstrated an interest in education reform and strong alignment with the goals of MAYA

  • Built high-quality relationships with team members and partners 

  • Managed multiple stakeholders and successfully lead complex projects

  • Shown strong  verbal and written communication skills

  • BA/BS required, advanced degree strongly preferred


what you will do

You will provide technical assistance for several School Action Fund (SAF) or other TEA grantees, which includes: 

  1. Program Expertise: Learning about the Texas Education Agency (TEA) Systems of Great Schools strategy, various school actions, relevant TEA grants, and serving as a resource about the theory of action to MAYA’s district clients.

  2. Project Management: Implement with fidelity MAYA’s approach to project management, which includes understanding the district client’s vision and strategy; facilitating weekly check-ins with districts and their partners (as relevant); connecting and brokering services from legal counsel as other third-party providers; and using the Fidelity of Implementation tool to support client progress towards meeting grant milestones. 

  3. Communication: Sharing progress with the MAYA team for problem solving and communication with TEA staff.
